NDA seat-sharing talks stall as allies demand larger local body quotas
Coalition partners in ongoing negotiations over municipal elections remain at odds over seat distribution, with both the BJP and JSP pushing for substantially larger allocations than currently proposed.

Seat-sharing negotiations within the National Democratic Alliance have hit a roadblock ahead of local body elections, with key partners unable to reach consensus on seat distribution formulas. The BJP has reportedly rejected a five percent quota of seats offered by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), signalling its demand for a more substantial share in the forthcoming municipal polls.
The Jana Sena Party (JSP) has similarly raised objections to its proposed allocation, seeking eight Mayor positions against the five or six seats that have been tentatively offered. The divergence in expectations suggests wider fissures within the coalition's power-sharing framework at the local level.
These stalled discussions underscore the complexities of managing multi-party alliances during electoral processes, where constituent parties seek to maximize their organizational presence and influence in municipal governance. The impasse reflects competing ambitions among alliance members to strengthen their ground-level organization and electoral prospects.
Coalition leaders are expected to resume formal negotiations to bridge the gap between proposed allocations and stated demands. The outcome of these talks will likely shape the NDA's electoral strategy and the broader political dynamics in the region's urban centres.
