Nearly 600 children unaccounted for in Nepal's devastating flash floods

The death toll from Nepal's flash floods has climbed to 1,282, with rescue teams scrambling to locate nearly 4,800 missing persons across multiple districts, according to Nepal Police. The calamity struck on August 26 when an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border unleashed devastating floods that swept through towns and villages across a wide swathe of northern and central Nepal, destroying homes, infrastructure and agricultural land.

Among the most pressing concerns is the fate of around 600 children unaccounted for in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. Local reports indicate approximately 280 children are missing in Rasuwa alone, while between 300 and 350 children remain unaccounted for in neighbouring Nuwakot, compounding the humanitarian crisis gripping the region.

Recovery efforts have yielded grim results, with 359 bodies recovered in Chitwan district, 218 in Nawalparasi East, 208 in Nawalparasi West, 185 in Nuwakot, 140 in Rasuwa, 72 in Gorkha, 60 in Dhading and 38 in Tanahu. Two additional deaths were recorded at hospitals in Kathmandu where flood survivors are undergoing treatment.

Security forces have launched coordinated search and rescue operations across the affected areas. Authorities have not yet released detailed information on the recovery prospects for the missing persons, though rescue teams continue combing through debris and affected villages searching for survivors.
