Neerja Bhanot, a 23-year-old purser aboard Pan American Flight 73, became a symbol of selfless heroism when armed hijackers stormed the aircraft at Karachi airport in 1986. As four gunmen took control of the Boeing 747, Bhanot swiftly moved through the cabin, collecting and hiding the passports of 379 passengers and crew members, preventing the attackers from identifying potential victims.
With the hijackers intent on singling out American citizens for execution, Bhanot's quick thinking proved crucial. She systematically concealed travel documents and provided false information when questioned, ensuring that passengers could not be separated by nationality. Her actions bought precious time as negotiations progressed and authorities prepared a rescue operation.
When the situation escalated and gunfire erupted, Bhanot remained focused on protecting those around her. She helped evacuate passengers through emergency slides despite the chaos and crossfire. In the final moments, she shielded a child from bullets, sustaining fatal injuries in the process. Her selfless act resulted in the safe evacuation of the majority of passengers aboard.
Neerja Bhanot was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award, in recognition of her exceptional bravery. Her legacy continues to inspire generations, exemplifying the highest ideals of duty and sacrifice in service of others.
