Negros, Tacloban schools go online as dangerous heat forces class suspensions

Classes in 17 localities across Negros Occidental shifted to online instruction Wednesday as municipal and city governments moved to protect learners and educators from hazardous heat conditions sweeping the region. The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office confirmed that heat index readings had climbed to dangerous levels, prompting the coordinated suspension of face-to-face classes across the affected areas.

The decision to transition to remote learning came as temperatures and humidity combined to create conditions the provincial disaster office deemed unsafe for prolonged outdoor and indoor activities in school facilities. Officials determined that shifting to online platforms would mitigate health risks while maintaining continuity of instruction for students in the province.

Likewise, similar heat-related class suspensions were implemented in Tacloban City, reflecting a broader regional response to the extreme weather conditions affecting Visayas residents. School administrators in both provinces coordinated with local government units to ensure parents received timely notification of the schedule changes.

The measure underscores growing concerns among education officials about the impact of rising temperatures on student welfare during the school year. Authorities did not immediately specify when in-person classes would resume pending improvement in weather conditions.
