Nepal death toll surges to 939 as thousands remain missing after catastrophic floods

The death toll from Nepal's catastrophic flash floods climbed to 939 on Monday as recovery teams continued retrieving bodies from the affected areas. Authorities report that approximately 4,000 people remain missing across the disaster zone, while more than 10,000 have been successfully rescued so far.

The disaster struck on August 26 when an ice and rock collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border triggered massive flash floods that swept through northern and central Nepal with devastating force. The Bhotekoshi River, which originates in the Himalayan border region, became a torrent that destroyed homes, vehicles, roads and bridges across multiple districts. Several hydropower projects in the region also sustained significant damage from the floodwaters.

Search and rescue operations face considerable obstacles as teams navigate intermittent rainfall, swollen river systems and extensive infrastructure damage. Rescue teams are specifically focused on locating 639 workers and employees reported missing from various hydropower project sites in the flood-affected areas.

The disaster has also impacted the neighbouring Chinese region, with 16 confirmed deaths on the Tibetan side and approximately 550 people still missing, according to Chinese media reports. Cross-border coordination between Nepal and China continues as both nations work to account for all missing persons and provide humanitarian assistance to displaced communities.
