Nepal faces US$2.56 billion bill to rebuild after devastating floods
Nepal is grappling with massive reconstruction costs following severe flooding that has left the country reeling. Initial recovery efforts for critical infrastructure alone are projected to cost tens of millions of dollars over the coming months.

Nepal's government has estimated total losses from recent flooding at approximately US$2.56 billion, with officials warning of the scale of the disaster's impact on the nation's infrastructure and economy.
The immediate priority for recovery focuses on restoring essential services that have been severely disrupted. Nepalese authorities have identified the restoration of roads, emergency shelters, drinking water systems and power supply as critical first-phase objectives, with costs for these initiatives alone projected at US$52.6 million over the first four months of the recovery effort.
The flooding has underscored the vulnerability of Nepal's infrastructure to climate-related disasters. The Himalayan nation frequently faces challenges from monsoon rains and water-related disasters, which pose significant risks to both urban and rural communities.
Reconstruction efforts are expected to extend well beyond the initial four-month period, with the full recovery process likely to strain Nepal's financial resources and require sustained international support. The government is currently assessing additional damage to agricultural areas, health facilities and educational institutions affected by the disaster.
