Nepal flash floods death toll exceeds 1,400 as search continues

Security forces recovered six bodies Friday from the Audit-3 tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower project in Nuwakot district, bringing fresh urgency to ongoing recovery efforts. The bodies were discovered entangled within steel reinforcement mesh used for concrete work, requiring rescue teams to deploy grinders, gas cutters and specialized rotary equipment for extraction.

The catastrophic flooding, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, has left a trail of destruction across northern and central Nepal. Official figures as of Thursday placed the death toll at 1,410, with 6,145 people unaccounted for in the disaster's aftermath.

Despite the grim toll, rescue operations have achieved considerable success in the weeks following the calamity. Joint teams comprising security personnel and the Nepal Army have rescued more than 13,756 people from affected areas, providing a measure of hope amid the widespread devastation.

The Upper Trishuli-1 project site has emerged as a particularly challenging recovery zone, with workers and visitors at the hydropower facility among those caught in the disaster's path. Recovery teams have maintained search operations at multiple sites across affected regions as authorities work to locate the missing and provide closure to affected families.
