Nepal flood death toll climbs to 1,295 as rescue efforts continue

Nepal's death toll from catastrophic flash floods has risen to 1,295, with recovery operations continuing across eight districts in the northern and central regions of the country. The disaster was triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, devastating towns and villages in its path.

According to Nepal Police, 1,293 bodies have been recovered so far. Chitwan district has been the hardest hit with 359 deaths, followed by Nawalparasi East with 221 fatalities and Nawalparasi West with 212. Other affected districts include Nuwakot with 186 deaths, Rasuwa with 140, Gorkha with 72, Dhading with 65, and Tanahu with 38 deaths. Two additional victims died in hospitals in Kathmandu on Friday, bringing the total to 1,295.

In a glimmer of hope amid the tragedy, two workers were rescued alive on Friday from a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower project after being trapped for nine days. The rescue marked a significant success in ongoing relief efforts as security forces continue search and rescue operations across the affected regions, with an estimated number of people still missing.
