Nepal flood death toll exceeds 1,450 as search continues for missing

Nepal Police confirmed Sunday that the death toll from the August 26 flash floods has reached 1,451, with recovery operations ongoing in affected areas. The disaster originated near the Nepal-Tibet border and swept through towns and villages in northern and central Nepal with catastrophic force.

The Bhotekoshi River, flowing southward from the Himalayan border region, became a torrent that devastated entire communities. The floodwaters destroyed homes, vehicles, roads and bridges while causing severe damage to hydropower projects across the region.

Chitwan district has recorded the highest casualty count with 367 confirmed deaths, followed by Rasuwa with 236 fatalities. Nawalparasi East and West districts combined have reported 454 deaths, while Nuwakot district has recorded 203 deaths. Other affected districts continue to report additional casualties as recovery efforts proceed.

The disaster crossed international borders, claiming 43 lives on the Chinese side, where authorities report more than 500 people remain missing. The scale of the missing persons crisis underscores the catastrophic impact of the floods, with Nepali authorities mounting an extensive search and rescue operation across affected regions.
