Nepal flood death toll reaches 1,252 as recovery efforts continue

The death toll from catastrophic flash floods in Nepal climbed to 1,252 on Thursday as recovery operations entered their ninth day, according to Nepal Police data. Rescue teams continue to comb through affected areas across multiple districts in northern and central Nepal, where the disaster has left thousands unaccounted for.

Chitawan district has recorded the highest number of casualties with 355 bodies recovered, followed by Nawalparasi East with 218 deaths. Nawalparasi West has confirmed 208 fatalities, including 18 bodies recovered from Indian territory and subsequently handed over to Nepalese authorities. Additional deaths have been reported in Nuwakot (177), Rasuwa (127), Gorkha (69), Dhading (60), and Tahanu (38).

The floods were triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, which unleashed destructive waters through towns and villages across the region. Joint rescue teams led by the Nepal Army have intensified their search operations as the estimated number of missing persons stands at approximately 4,875.

The scale of the disaster has prompted extensive cross-border coordination, with authorities receiving assistance in recovery efforts. Rescuers are working against time as concerns grow over the fate of thousands still unaccounted for in the aftermath of the natural catastrophe.
