Nepal flood death toll reaches 1,453 as search efforts continue
A month after devastating flash floods swept through Nepal's central and northern regions, authorities report 1,453 confirmed deaths with over 5,200 people still missing. Rescue operations have saved nearly 14,000 people, though thousands remain displaced.

Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said Saturday that 1,451 bodies have been recovered from the August 26 disaster, with two additional deaths occurring during medical treatment. The confirmed death toll stands at 1,453, while 5,285 people remain unaccounted for across affected districts.
Rescue teams have retrieved 13,795 people to date, with authorities continuing search and recovery operations more than a month after the calamity. Currently, 1,113 rescued individuals are sheltering in 21 holding centres, including 187 from Nuwakot district, 805 from Rasuwa and 121 from Dhading.
The flash floods originated near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, with the Bhotekoshi River carrying torrents of water southward from the Himalayan region. The deluge destroyed homes, vehicles and critical infrastructure including roads, bridges and hydropower facilities across multiple districts in central and northern Nepal.
The disaster's impact extended beyond Nepal's borders. In the adjoining Tibetan region, 43 people died and more than 500 remain missing following the same flooding event. Authorities in both regions are continuing relief and rehabilitation efforts for affected communities.
