Nepal flood death toll surges to 1,385 as rescue efforts continue

The death toll from Nepal's catastrophic flash floods has risen to 1,385, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), as recovery efforts intensify across the affected regions. The avalanche-triggered floods ravaged multiple districts, with Chitwan bearing the heaviest toll at 364 confirmed deaths, followed by Nawalparasi East with 228 fatalities and Nawalparasi West with 222. Other severely affected districts include Nuwakot with 199 deaths, Rasuwa with 185, Gorkha with 77, Dhading with 70, and Tanahu with 38 deaths. Two additional victims succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment in Kathmandu.

Search and rescue operations remain ongoing for an estimated 5,130 missing persons across the disaster zone. Security personnel have mounted a coordinated response, and rescue teams have successfully extracted 13,676 people from various locations since the disaster struck. The initial avalanche on August 26 near the Nepal-Tibet border released a torrent of water and debris that swept through towns and villages with little warning.

The scale of displacement has extended beyond Nepal's borders, with at least 703 Nepalese nationals reported stranded in the aftermath of the floods. Authorities have prioritized locating the remaining missing persons while simultaneously addressing the humanitarian needs of thousands displaced by the disaster.
