Nepal flood survivors grapple with loss of homes and loved ones

Anusa Thapa Magar cut short her employment in the Maldives and returned to Nepal after learning of the country's severe flooding, desperate to confirm her grandmother's safety among the survivors. Her journey back reflects the anguish experienced by thousands of Nepalis whose families were scattered and homes destroyed by the disaster.

In towns including Betrawati and Devighat, the scale of devastation has left little recognizable of residents' former lives. Entire neighbourhoods have been reduced to debris, with floodwaters having swept away homes, possessions and infrastructure. Aid workers and local officials are struggling to manage the scale of displacement and loss across affected regions.

The flooding has compounded the challenge of identifying survivors and locating missing persons. With communication networks damaged and displaced populations scattered across temporary shelters, authorities face significant logistical difficulties in reuniting families and establishing accurate casualty figures.

Government agencies and international humanitarian organizations have deployed teams to provide emergency assistance, including shelter, food and medical care. However, officials acknowledge that rebuilding efforts will require sustained international support and coordination as affected communities confront the long-term challenge of reconstruction.
