Nepal flood survivors share harrowing tales of escape from devastating deluge

The image of mud-caked elderly resident Guna Maya Bohara being lifted to safety in an excavator bucket has become emblematic of survival stories emerging from Nepal's worst flood disaster in recent memory. The 97-year-old was extracted alive from the wreckage of her care home, with doctors reporting her recovery is progressing in hospital. Her great-nephew Dipak described her as looking like "a warrior" who had triumphed in battle, according to reports.

Across the flood-ravaged regions of Nepal, similar tales of escape continue to surface. Residents fled collapsing villages, scrambled to hillsides for refuge, and spent harrowing nights stranded in forests awaiting rescue. The speed and ferocity of the flash floods left little time for evacuation, forcing many to seek shelter wherever they could find it.

The humanitarian toll remains severe. The death toll crossed 600 by Saturday as rescue and relief operations intensified, with authorities racing against deteriorating conditions. More than 2,400 people remain missing, prompting an expanded search effort across the affected areas. Rescue teams are working systematically through affected settlements, using heavy machinery and manual labor to locate survivors buried under debris and mud.
