Nepal floods create 16-km truck backlog at India border crossing
Flash flooding in Nepal has severely disrupted bilateral trade, with hundreds of cargo vehicles stranded at the Sonauli border crossing in Uttar Pradesh. The massive traffic jam threatens to worsen as damaged roads across Nepal continue to obstruct cross-border commerce.

A 16-kilometre queue of commercial vehicles has accumulated on the Indian side of the Sonauli border in Maharajganj district following widespread flooding across Nepal. The gridlock comprises trucks destined for Kathmandu and other Nepali towns, unable to proceed due to damaged highways and inundated routes on the Nepali side of the crossing.
The congestion has extended towards Nautanwa, raising concerns about congestion on India's national highway network. Traffic movement remains severely restricted across multiple routes connecting the border region to Nepal's interior, effectively halting the flow of goods vehicles that typically transit through Maharajganj.
Authorities have intensified surveillance operations at the crossing to manage the situation. Circle Officer Basant Singh stated that heightened alert measures have been implemented, with police station chiefs across border areas directed to monitor developments closely and regulate vehicular movement.
Security and law enforcement personnel are working to regulate traffic flow as officials warn conditions could deteriorate further if flooding persists and road rehabilitation efforts in Nepal do not accelerate. The disruption underscores the vulnerability of India-Nepal trade corridors to weather-related incidents and the critical importance of cross-border infrastructure maintenance.
