Nepal issues flood alert as four major rivers breach danger levels

Nepal's Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has alerted residents across central, western, and eastern regions following dangerous water level rises in major river systems. As of early Wednesday morning, the Sun Koshi River in Sindhuli district, the Budhi Gandaki River in Gorkha, and the Mahakali River in Dadeldhura were all above alert levels, according to the department's Flood Forecasting Division.

The alert escalated after the Marsyangdi River in Lamjung district crossed the danger threshold at the Bhukundebesi water level monitoring station late Tuesday evening. Authorities warned that water levels in the Marsyangdi continue to rise, significantly increasing flood risk in downstream areas. The surge follows heavy rainfall across different parts of the Himalayan nation over recent days.

The Flood Forecasting Division urged residents in downstream communities of the affected rivers to exercise heightened caution. Officials have not indicated whether evacuations have been ordered, though communities in low-lying areas near the four rivers are being advised to prepare for potential flooding. The department is continuing to monitor water levels at multiple stations across the affected regions.
