Rescue operations continued in Nepal on Wednesday following a devastating avalanche in the Himlung Himalaya that has claimed multiple lives and left a dozen people missing. So far, four bodies have been recovered from the snow-covered slopes, with rescue teams struggling against difficult mountain terrain to locate the remaining 12 missing persons.
The avalanche represents the second major natural disaster to strike Nepal within a span of just one month. Earlier flooding and landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains have claimed 24 lives across the country, compounding the humanitarian crisis facing the nation's disaster-management authorities.
The Gandaki Province has borne the brunt of the recent calamities, with the swollen Kali Gandaki river inundating settlements and agricultural areas across multiple districts. Local officials report significant infrastructure damage, including washed-away roads and destroyed homes, hindering relief and rescue operations.
The back-to-back disasters have highlighted Nepal's vulnerability to natural hazards and strained the country's emergency response capacity. Authorities have appealed for international assistance as recovery efforts expand across affected regions.
