Nepal seeks fresh start with India, moving past nationalist rhetoric

Nepal's Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle has indicated a significant shift in how Kathmandu approaches its relationship with New Delhi, arguing that outdated patterns of nationalist posturing no longer define Nepal's foreign policy trajectory.

Wagle, who travelled to the Indian capital for meetings in the aftermath of Nepal's recent devastating floods, characterised the historical conflation of Nepali nationalism with anti-Indian sentiment as a relic of the past. The remarks suggest an attempt to move beyond the recurring tensions that have periodically strained ties between the South Asian neighbours.

The Finance Minister's outreach comes as Nepal seeks to recalibrate key aspects of its engagement with India, including revisions to existing trade arrangements and coordination on regional connectivity projects. The discussions signal potential momentum for resolving longstanding irritants in a relationship that has been marked by periodic friction over trade imbalances, border management, and competing strategic interests.
