Nepal sought China's help on glacier disaster warnings before catastrophe

Officials and experts from Nepal and China met in Kathmandu three months prior to a catastrophic glacial lake outburst flood that claimed hundreds of lives in a Himalayan valley straddling their border. The meeting underscored growing concerns among both nations about the escalating risks posed by such disasters as climate change accelerates glacial melting across the region.

The Himalayan valleys that form the border between Nepal and China face particular vulnerability to glacial hazards, where warming temperatures have led to the formation of unstable glacial lakes. When these lakes breach their natural barriers, they can unleash torrents of water, mud, and rock with devastating force, threatening communities and infrastructure downstream.

The pre-disaster dialogue between the two countries suggested heightened awareness of the threat among regional officials.
