Nepal-Tibet flash floods death toll reaches 392; hundreds still missing

The death toll from devastating flash floods that swept through Nepal and Tibet rose to 392 on Thursday as search and rescue operations continued across the affected region. Of the confirmed fatalities, 389 occurred in Nepal with three deaths reported in the neighbouring Tibetan area. Hundreds of people, including at least 290 Indian citizens, remain missing as rescue teams race against deteriorating weather conditions and ongoing hazards.

Rescue efforts have so far recovered 796 survivors through helicopter operations, while another 796 people have been evacuated by road from the disaster zone, according to statements from Nepal Police. The agency did not provide detailed breakdowns of the nationalities of foreign nationals among those rescued, though officials confirmed that 50 foreigners have been extracted from the affected areas.

The catastrophe was triggered on Wednesday by an ice-rock avalanche resulting from a massive glacial collapse in the Himalayan border region. The resulting torrent of water, mud and rocky debris devastated communities throughout central Nepal, destroying homes, vehicles, critical infrastructure including bridges and roads, and damaging several hydropower installations in the process.

Authorities have warned of fresh flooding dangers downstream following the formation of a new barrier lake near the source of the Bhote Kos river, raising concerns about potential secondary disasters in areas already struck by the initial surge.
