Nerve stimulation device shows promise in lowering blood pressure without drugs

Scientists are investigating an innovative approach to managing high blood pressure that could reduce reliance on pharmaceutical interventions. The technique, known as transcutaneous autonomic neuromodulation, involves stimulating nerves through the ear to help lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension.

A clinical trial involving 63 participants who continued to struggle with uncontrolled hypertension despite taking medication provided the initial evidence for the approach. Among those with severe cases, the results were particularly encouraging, suggesting the device may be effective where conventional drug treatments have fallen short.

The non-invasive nature of the technique represents a significant advantage over traditional pharmacological interventions, which often require long-term medication compliance and can carry side effects. However, researchers acknowledge that additional studies are necessary to fully validate the efficacy and safety of this approach across broader patient populations.

If proven successful through further research, transcutaneous autonomic neuromodulation could offer an alternative or complementary treatment option for the millions of Indians managing hypertension, a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease in the country.
