Netanyahu could remain PM for year even without government formation

Initial results from Israel's latest election indicate a fragmented parliament with no single coalition securing the decisive majority needed to form a government, according to early projections.

Netanyahu's coalition is projected to secure approximately 53 seats in the Knesset, while the opposition bloc is estimated to command around 48 seats. The divided outcome leaves both major political groupings short of the 61 seats required for a parliamentary majority.

Under Israeli law, when no government emerges from elections, the outgoing prime minister may remain in office as a caretaker pending the formation of a new administration. This provision could allow Netanyahu to retain the prime minister's position for an extended period—potentially up to a year—while coalition negotiations continue.

The caretaker arrangement grants a sitting PM limited executive authority, permitting routine governance while restricting major policy decisions and budgetary matters. The provision is designed to ensure administrative continuity during extended negotiations that often follow inconclusive electoral results in Israel's multi-party political system.

Coalition talks are expected to commence following the finalization of election results, though negotiations could prove protracted given the fragmented parliamentary composition.
