New antivenom shows promise against cobra venom in laboratory trials
Scientists have developed a novel antivenom using five nanobodies that successfully protected laboratory mice from the venom of multiple cobra and king cobra species in experimental testing.

Researchers have achieved a significant breakthrough in cobra bite treatment with the development of a new antivenom formulation based on nanobody technology. The experimental antivenom, constructed from five synthetic nanobodies, demonstrated effectiveness against venom from several dangerous cobra species including the king cobra, according to laboratory results.
During testing on mice, the newly formulated antivenom successfully neutralized the effects of venom from multiple cobra species and king cobras. The results offer renewed hope for victims of cobra bites, which remain a serious public health concern across South Asia where these venomous snakes are common.
The use of nanobodies—small protein fragments derived from camelid antibodies—represents an emerging approach in antivenom development. These molecular components are smaller and more targeted than traditional antibodies, potentially allowing for more precise neutralization of specific venom toxins.
While the laboratory findings are encouraging, the antivenom will require further testing and regulatory approval before becoming available for clinical use in treating snake bite victims. Researchers indicated that the development could eventually provide an improved treatment option for the thousands of people bitten by cobras annually in the region.
