COTABATO CITY — Abdulraof Macacua assumed office as Bangsamoro chief minister Friday, immediately extending an olive branch to political rivals and opposition figures in the autonomous region. During his inaugural speech following his election victory, Macacua urged all political leaders, including those who opposed his candidacy, to collaborate with his administration in service to the Bangsamoro people.
Macacua defeated Ahod "Al Haj Murad" Ebrahim, who served as chief minister and chairs the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), in the closely watched election. The change in leadership represents a significant development in the region's political landscape following years of governance by the MILF-aligned administration.
The incoming chief minister's call for reconciliation signals a desire to move beyond electoral divisions and chart a unified course for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). His appeal to opposition figures underscores the importance of broad-based support as he prepares to address regional development and governance priorities.
Macacua's victory and subsequent emphasis on inclusive governance sets the tone for his administration's approach to key issues facing the autonomous region, which has been at the center of peace and development efforts in Mindanao.
