New eel species discovered in Arabian Sea, named after CMFRI

Researchers working in Indian waters have formally described a new species of eel collected from the Arabian Sea, extending the known diversity of marine life in the region. The specimen, designated Ariosoma cmfriense, was recovered from depths of approximately 300 metres off Kollam in Kerala during January 2026.

The identification of the species represents a significant addition to the catalogued fauna of the Arabian Sea and highlights the region's continued importance for marine biodiversity research. Deep-sea surveys such as the one that yielded this discovery remain critical for understanding the full extent of India's marine ecosystems.

The naming of the species after the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) recognises the institution's long-standing role in advancing marine science and fisheries research across the Indian Ocean region. CMFRI, based in Kochi, has been instrumental in numerous marine surveys and species documentation efforts along the Indian coast.

The discovery underscores the need for continued scientific exploration of India's deep-water habitats, where many organisms remain undocumented. As marine research methodologies advance, such finds are expected to become increasingly common, providing scientists with a more comprehensive understanding of oceanic life at various depths and geographical locations.
