New ferry service to boost transport links between Delft and Jaffna

Cabinet approval has been granted to introduce a new passenger ferry service operating between Delft and Jaffna, marking a step forward in enhancing maritime transport infrastructure in the Northern Province. The initiative forms part of the government's broader Praja Shakthi National Programme, which aims to strengthen public services and connectivity across the country.

The new ferry is engineered to accommodate approximately 150 passengers per voyage, substantially increasing the volume of travellers the route can safely handle. Current transport facilities on the Delft-Jaffna corridor have been identified as insufficient to meet existing demand, with the new vessel expected to address this capacity shortfall.

The deployment of the enhanced ferry service is anticipated to facilitate improved travel options for residents and visitors requiring passage between the two islands. The move reflects government efforts to modernize inter-island transport networks and support economic and social connectivity in northern regions.

Further implementation details regarding the ferry's operational schedule, ticketing arrangements, and service commencement date are anticipated to be announced through relevant transport authorities.
