Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit has prioritised indigenous fighter development and combat readiness as he assumes leadership of the Indian Air Force, outlining a comprehensive agenda aimed at modernising the service's capabilities. The focus on indigenous programmes reflects India's long-standing commitment to reducing dependence on foreign defence systems while building self-reliant military infrastructure. The newly appointed chief's strategy encompasses accelerated development of key platforms including the Tejas light combat aircraft and the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), both critical to India's fighter fleet modernisation plans. Dixit's agenda, referred to as the 'VAYU' initiative, reflects a multi-dimensional approach to enhancing the IAF's operational strength. A significant component involves restoring the IAF's squadron strength, which has declined below authorised levels in recent years. The strategy also emphasises deeper integration between the Air Force and other armed services, recognising the need for cohesive defence operations in an increasingly complex security environment. As India faces evolving challenges in the Indo-Pacific region, the new chief's emphasis on indigenous capabilities and joint service readiness aligns with broader Defence Ministry objectives to strengthen the nation's military posture while promoting domestic defence manufacturing and technological advancement.
