New Jersey wildlife centre rehabilitates 219 abandoned box turtles

The Mercer County Wildlife Center has launched a comprehensive rehabilitation effort for 219 box turtles discovered abandoned near Cranford, New Jersey, in July. The turtles were found in poor condition near the riverbank, prompting authorities to mount a significant rescue operation.

Staff at the wildlife centre have been assessing and caring for the animals since their rescue. As autumn turns to winter, the facility is constructing purpose-built outdoor enclosures designed to facilitate the turtles' natural brumation process, a hibernation-like state that allows them to survive the cold months.

The discovery of such a large number of abandoned turtles at a single location has raised concerns about illegal wildlife trafficking and abandonment. Box turtles are native to the northeastern United States and require specific environmental conditions to thrive, making their care in rehabilitation centres a complex undertaking.

The rehabilitation centre's work with the rescued animals demonstrates the challenges faced by wildlife facilities in managing large-scale animal rescues. As winter approaches, the centre remains focused on ensuring the turtles can safely enter brumation and prepare for their eventual release back into appropriate habitats.
