New rail service launches between Polgahawela and Peradeniya

A new passenger train service between Polgahawela and Peradeniya entered operation on October 12, according to Sri Lanka Railways. The service has been introduced primarily to accommodate schoolchildren and other regular commuters on the route, expanding connectivity along the central highlands corridor.

The launch follows the resumption of train operations on the Upcountry Railway Line between Rambukkana and Gampola on October 2, after an extended period of service disruption on that segment. The phased restoration of services on this key route reflects ongoing efforts to revitalise rail transport in the central provinces.

The new Polgahawela-Peradeniya connection is expected to facilitate improved mobility for residents and students in the region while supporting broader objectives to enhance public transport infrastructure in Sri Lanka's central highlands.
