A previously underutilised underpass in Katugastota has been officially opened to provide a safer passage for thousands of schoolgirls crossing a busy thoroughfare daily.

The underpass situated in front of St. Anthony's Girls' College and Sri Chandananda Buddhist Girls' College was formally inaugurated on Thursday by Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, Dr. Prasanna Gunasena. The crossing point sees more than 5,000 schoolgirls negotiate the road during school days, many of whom previously faced hazardous conditions while crossing.

The facility had remained largely abandoned and underutilised prior to its reopening, leaving students exposed to significant road safety risks in the high-traffic area. The inauguration marks a step toward improving pedestrian safety infrastructure in the region.

The underpass project addresses longstanding concerns about student welfare and traffic safety in the Katugastota area, where the concentration of educational institutions creates substantial daily foot traffic across major roads. School authorities and local officials have previously flagged the need for safer crossing mechanisms.
