NEW YORK — A potential joint Winter Olympics bid involving New York City and Lake Placid advanced Monday as members of an exploratory committee gathered for their inaugural meeting in Manhattan.
The initiative would position the five boroughs to host their first-ever Winter Games, with Lake Placid — which previously hosted the Winter Olympics in 1980 — providing existing sporting infrastructure and experience in staging the event.
The exploratory committee's formation represents an early phase in what would become a lengthy candidacy process. Any formal bid to the International Olympic Committee would require considerable planning, financial commitments, and securing political support from local and state governments.
New York City has hosted the Summer Olympics once, in 1932, while the metropolitan region has only limited Winter Olympic hosting experience. A joint approach with Lake Placid, located approximately 350 kilometres north of Manhattan in the Adirondack Mountains, would leverage established winter sports facilities and infrastructure already in place from the 1980 Games.
The committee's next steps will likely include detailed assessments of venue requirements, accommodation needs, transportation logistics, and cost projections for hosting the 2042 Winter Olympics.
