Santner addressed the considerable threat presented by the two Indian veterans ahead of the series opener on Wednesday, noting that both players continue to perform at the highest level despite their experience. "They're getting on, but they're still playing very well. We saw it in the last series against the West Indies," Santner said at the pre-match press conference.
The New Zealand skipper highlighted Rohit and Kohli's continued dominance in limited-overs cricket, referencing their recent performances and Rohit's consistent excellence in the Indian Premier League. With both players now focused exclusively on ODI cricket, Santner emphasized their value to the sport.
Santner outlined a flexible bowling approach that will adapt to prevailing pitch conditions. He stressed the importance of understanding how the surface will behave under different circumstances, requiring his bowlers to be prepared for both seam-friendly wickets that offer movement and flatter pitches that favor batting. "When it's doing a bit, what does it look like? And then when it's flat, what does that look like as well?" he said.
The tactical preparation underscores the challenge posed by two of international cricket's most accomplished batsmen, requiring New Zealand to employ discipline and adaptability throughout the series.
