Polling stations across New Zealand closed after a day of voting in the country's general election, with the Electoral Commission preparing to release the first wave of results. Officials expect to have counted ballots from approximately 50 per cent of voting locations by 10pm local time, equivalent to 5pm Singapore time.
The phased release of results will provide early indicators of voting patterns, though a full picture of the election outcome may not emerge until later counts are completed. All advance votes cast during the pre-polling period will also be factored into the final tally.
New Zealand's electoral process involves voters selecting their preferred electorate representative and a political party. The combination of electorate seats and party votes determines the composition of the 120-member Parliament and which parties will form the next government.
As results become available, political parties and observers will begin analysing the outcome to assess the likely shape of New Zealand's next administration and any potential coalition negotiations that may be required to form a governing majority.
