NGO urges Karnataka to strengthen safety measures for migrant vendors during Dasara

An NGO working on migrant workers' rights has submitted recommendations to the Karnataka government seeking enhanced protective measures for families of street vendors operating during the Dasara celebrations. The appeal comes in the wake of a tragic incident in 2025 involving a nine-year-old girl from a migrant family who worked as a balloon seller near the Dasara exhibition grounds.

The organisation highlighted the vulnerability of children working alongside their families in crowded public spaces during major festivals. Street vending communities, many of whom migrate seasonally to urban centres for increased commercial opportunities during Dasara, often lack adequate access to safety mechanisms and support systems.

The NGO's recommendations are understood to focus on increased police presence in vendor-designated areas, awareness campaigns on child protection, and coordination between authorities and community organisations. Officials have been urged to establish dedicated complaint mechanisms and ensure rapid response protocols for incidents involving vulnerable populations.

Dasara, one of Karnataka's major festivals, draws large crowds to exhibition grounds and commercial areas, where temporary vendors set up stalls. Migrant families frequently participate in this informal economy, often bringing children to assist with sales operations.
