NHAI launches citizen reporting scheme for unhygienic toll plaza toilets

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a citizen reporting mechanism aimed at improving sanitation facilities at toll plazas across the country. Under the scheme, members of the public can submit photographs of unhygienic toilet conditions and receive a financial reward of Rs 1,000 for each verified report.

To qualify for the incentive, submitted photographs must meet specific technical requirements. Images must be clear, geo-tagged with precise location data, and time-stamped to establish authenticity. The NHAI has clarified that duplicate submissions, edited images, and previously reported instances will be rejected to prevent misuse of the scheme.

The authority plans to employ a two-tier verification process combining artificial intelligence-based screening with manual review to assess the validity of reports. This approach is designed to filter out frivolous or fraudulent submissions while identifying genuine cases of poor sanitation that require immediate remedial action.

The initiative reflects NHAI's effort to leverage citizen participation in maintaining infrastructure standards. By offering monetary incentives, the authority aims to create a transparent reporting system that encourages travelers and highway users to contribute to improving amenities at toll facilities across India's highway network.
