NHAI launches quality audits on 17 highway projects with suspiciously low bids

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated a comprehensive quality assurance programme targeting 17 highway projects where bidding prices fell more than 15 per cent below the authority's initial cost estimates. The move aims to safeguard infrastructure quality amid concerns that abnormally low quotations could compromise construction standards and project durability.

Under the inspection protocol, NHAI teams will conduct detailed quality assessments of materials, workmanship, and adherence to technical specifications across these 17 projects. The authority views the unusually low bids with caution, recognising that aggressive pricing strategies may lead contractors to cut corners or use substandard materials to maintain profit margins.

The quality oversight framework includes a two-stage verification process, with initial inspections beginning immediately and a second round of comprehensive checks scheduled six months into the project execution timeline. This staggered approach will help NHAI identify and address any quality deficiencies before they become entrenched in the completed infrastructure.

The initiative underscores NHAI's growing emphasis on balancing cost efficiency with construction quality. While competitive bidding is essential for economical project execution, the authority recognises that protecting long-term asset integrity requires vigilant monitoring when bid prices deviate substantially from engineering estimates.
