LUCENA CITY — The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has completed installation of 170 solar-powered irrigation projects throughout the Calabarzon region, marking a significant step toward building climate resilience in agriculture, the agency's Regional Office IV-A announced Tuesday.
The initiative aims to provide farmers with a dependable and economical water supply as the region braces for extended dry conditions potentially intensified by a "super El Niño" phenomenon. Solar-powered systems reduce operational costs by eliminating fuel expenses while ensuring consistent water availability during critical growing seasons.
Calabarzon, comprising Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon provinces, is a major agricultural production area. The deployment of renewable energy-powered irrigation infrastructure addresses mounting concerns about water scarcity and rising energy costs that have traditionally squeezed farmer profit margins.
The completion of the 170 projects represents part of broader NIA efforts to modernize irrigation infrastructure across the country. Officials indicated the solar-powered systems will enhance food security while supporting the government's renewable energy transition goals.
