NIA hands over solar irrigation systems to Eastern Visayas farmers

The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) Region 8 recently turned over three solar-powered irrigation systems to farming communities across Leyte and Samar provinces. The projects are designed to provide more consistent water supply to approximately 42 hectares of cultivated land, addressing critical irrigation needs in an area increasingly vulnerable to climate-related disruptions.

The initiative comes as Eastern Visayas grapples with mounting agricultural challenges stemming from climate change and recurring El Niño phenomena. Solar-powered systems offer a sustainable alternative to traditional diesel-dependent irrigation, reducing operational costs and environmental impact while ensuring year-round water availability for farmers.

Local farming communities are expected to benefit from improved crop yields and expanded cultivation possibilities. The renewable energy-based infrastructure also reduces long-term dependence on fossil fuels, aligning with broader efforts to promote climate-resilient agriculture across the Philippines.

The NIA said the projects reflect its commitment to modernizing irrigation infrastructure in rural areas. Officials noted that similar initiatives will continue in other regions facing water scarcity and agricultural stress. The turnover underscores ongoing government efforts to enhance food security and farmer productivity amid changing environmental conditions.
