NIA inaugurates six solar-powered irrigation facilities in Leyte

TACLOBAN CITY — The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) Region 8 has formally inaugurated six solar-powered irrigation facilities throughout Leyte province, marking a significant step toward ensuring reliable water supply to farming communities during the expected dry season.

Regional Manager Jaime de Jesus led the opening ceremonies for the installations, which are designed to address water scarcity concerns as farmers prepare for the anticipated Super El Niño conditions. The solar-powered systems represent an environmentally sustainable approach to maintaining adequate irrigation for agricultural operations across the province.

The facilities are expected to strengthen the region's capacity to sustain crop production despite forecasted weather challenges. By leveraging renewable energy sources, the irrigation sites aim to reduce operational costs while providing dependable water access to farmlands that have historically faced seasonal shortages.

The initiative reflects the NIA's commitment to supporting agricultural productivity in Eastern Visayas through infrastructure improvements that combine climate resilience with sustainable resource management. Officials indicated the solar-powered systems would serve as a model for expanding similar facilities in other vulnerable agricultural areas.
