PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur — The National Irrigation Administration Region 9 has initiated a comprehensive response to anticipated El Niño effects, with regional officials directing staff to implement drought-resilience measures across the Zamboanga Peninsula.
Engr. June Nathaniel Plaza, NIA-9 regional manager, called for immediate action Monday, urging personnel to move beyond reactive responses and adopt forward-looking strategies to shield local farming communities from weather-related disruptions.
The administration's approach centers on two key initiatives: crop diversification strategies that encourage farmers to shift toward drought-resistant varieties and alternative agricultural enterprises, and administrative reforms designed to streamline irrigation management and resource allocation during periods of water scarcity.
The El Niño phenomenon, characterized by warmer ocean temperatures and reduced rainfall across Southeast Asia, has historically posed significant challenges to agricultural productivity in the region. By implementing these measures now, NIA-9 aims to minimize crop losses and stabilize farm incomes throughout the peninsula.
Regional officials have directed irrigation personnel to work closely with farming communities to identify suitable crop alternatives and optimize water distribution systems ahead of the anticipated dry period.
