Nine children test positive for malaria after chloroquine distribution in Andhra

Nine children from Gollaguppa village in Andhra Pradesh's Polavaram district have tested positive for malaria following a chloroquine distribution drive, health officials said. The cases are part of a larger health crisis affecting 52 villagers who fell ill after being administered chloroquine tablets during the public health initiative.

According to the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) Project Officer, 32 of the affected villagers have since been discharged from Bhadrachalam Area Hospital following treatment. However, the outbreak has raised serious questions about the administration and oversight of the mass medication program.

Health experts are currently examining the circumstances that led to the death of a girl from the village, as authorities work to determine what factors contributed to the adverse health outcomes. Preliminary testing has revealed that the positive malaria cases emerged following the chloroquine distribution, suggesting potential complications or underlying health conditions among the affected population.

The incident has prompted renewed scrutiny of health initiatives in tribal areas, where malaria prevention programs are typically conducted. Officials have not yet provided details on whether the chloroquine doses were administered correctly or whether other factors may have contributed to the illnesses and fatalities.
