Nine dead in Yamuna Expressway bus fire; driver and conductor arrested

The bus, carrying approximately 35 passengers from Delhi to Mahua in Jhansi district, burst into flames near the 33-kilometre marker on the Yamuna Expressway around 11 p.m. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but rescue efforts were hampered by the rapid spread of fire through the vehicle's confined spaces.

Survivors recounted scenes of panic as smoke rapidly filled the bus's interior, forcing passengers to fight their way toward exits in darkness and confusion. Many passengers sustained injuries while attempting to escape the burning vehicle, with rescue teams working through the night to assist those trapped inside.

Authorities have arrested the bus driver and conductor, registering a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder as investigations into the fire's origins begin. Police have not yet determined whether the blaze resulted from mechanical failure, electrical malfunction, or other factors. The Uttar Pradesh transport department has announced a preliminary inquiry into safety standards on the vehicle.

The incident has renewed concerns about safety standards on long-distance buses operating across India's national highways. Road transport officials said they would conduct safety audits of similar vehicles operating on major expressways in the coming weeks.
