CEBU CITY — A nine-year-old boy identified as Yuri drowned in the Butuanon River on Tuesday afternoon as heavy rains swept through Cebu City. The incident occurred in Barangay Budlaan, a mountain village in the city's upland areas, where strong currents posed a significant hazard.
The child went missing during the spell of bad weather triggered by the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Relatives immediately launched a search after discovering he was nowhere to be found, alerting authorities to his disappearance.
Rescue efforts ultimately recovered the boy's body hours later in the upstream portions of the river. The discovery confirmed fears held by his family that he had met with tragedy in the swollen waterway.
