MANILA — Nineteen candidates have applied for a Supreme Court vacancy that will open in mid-November following the compulsory retirement of Associate Justice Amy Lazaro-Javier, according to the Judicial and Bar Council.

The JBC announced it will commence interviews with the applicant pool starting October 13. The selection process will narrow the field, with eight of the 19 candidates advancing to the interview stage.

The vacant seat will need to be filled before Lazaro-Javier's mandatory retirement on November 16. The JBC's interview process represents a critical phase in identifying candidates qualified to serve on the nation's highest court.

The selection and appointment of a new associate justice follows constitutional procedures requiring the JBC to evaluate candidates' qualifications, judicial temperament, and suitability for the position. The final nomination will be submitted to the President for appointment.
