Nineteen Malaysian areas face unhealthy air quality, including Sabah and Sarawak

Nineteen areas across Malaysia are experiencing unhealthy air quality, with eastern states Sabah and Sarawak among the most affected regions, according to the latest air quality data. The decline in air quality has prompted renewed concern among residents and authorities monitoring pollution levels nationwide.

In the Klang Valley, which typically experiences some of the country's heaviest air traffic and industrial activity, the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings remained in the moderate range. However, three locations within the valley—Putrajaya, Johan Setia, and Klang itself—are approaching unhealthy levels, indicating a deteriorating trend that warrants continued monitoring.

The widespread air quality degradation across Sabah and Sarawak suggests regional factors may be contributing to the pollution episodes. Environmental officials have not yet issued formal advisories, though the situation underscores the ongoing challenges Malaysia faces in managing air quality across its diverse geographical regions.

Residents in affected areas are advised to monitor official API updates and take appropriate precautions, particularly those with respiratory conditions or compromised immune systems. Authorities are expected to provide further guidance should readings in any locations cross into hazardous territory.
