Nineteen West Bengal workers freed after wrongful detention in Chhattisgarh

Nineteen migrant workers from West Bengal were released from detention in Chhattisgarh after authorities determined they were Indian citizens, not Bangladeshi nationals as initially suspected. The labourers, who had been held on suspicion of being undocumented foreign workers, were cleared following verification of their identity documents and backgrounds.

The workers, employed in various industrial and construction sectors across Chhattisgarh, were apprehended during a routine check that escalated into a broader detention based on preliminary misidentification. Local authorities subsequently conducted inquiries that confirmed the workers' Indian citizenship and legitimate status in the state.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about profiling and mistaken identity cases at border regions and in states with significant migrant labour populations. While cross-border infiltration remains a security concern for authorities, civil liberties groups have flagged the need for more rigorous verification procedures before prolonged detention of suspected undocumented migrants.

The workers have now returned to West Bengal. Officials in Chhattisgarh said standard protocols were followed during the detention and subsequent release process.
