NIO, Geely forge battery-swapping partnership; open to industry collaboration

NIO Power, the battery services subsidiary of EV manufacturer NIO, will see Geely Holding Group take a 30 per cent stake under the newly announced agreement. The deal represents a strategic move by both companies to scale battery-swapping infrastructure across China's competitive electric vehicle market.

Battery swapping—allowing drivers to exchange depleted batteries for charged units at dedicated stations—has emerged as an alternative to traditional charging, potentially addressing range anxiety concerns among EV consumers. NIO has been a pioneer in this technology, operating a growing network of swap stations across major Chinese cities.

Under the partnership framework, Geely gains access to NIO's battery-swapping ecosystem and operational expertise, while NIO secures additional capital and manufacturing capacity to expand its power services division. The arrangement is structured to accommodate other automotive manufacturers, signalling the companies' willingness to open the platform to industry peers.

The move reflects a broader trend in China's automotive sector toward collaborative solutions for charging and battery infrastructure. By pooling resources and technology, competitors aim to accelerate EV adoption and reduce individual capital expenditures required to build out nationwide service networks.

Neither company has disclosed financial details beyond Geely's stake acquisition. Industry analysts suggest such partnerships could establish industry standards for battery-swapping technology, potentially benefiting the entire electric vehicle ecosystem in Asia's largest automotive market.
