NITI Aayog calls for overhaul of education-to-employment pipeline
India's policy think tank has urged a fundamental restructuring of how the country connects education, skills development and job creation, moving beyond simply expanding higher education access.

NITI Aayog has released a report arguing that India's current approach to human capital development requires significant rethinking to address persistent mismatches between education outcomes and employment realities.
The think tank contends that merely increasing enrolment in higher education and vocational training programmes is insufficient without concurrent reforms to align curriculum, skills instruction and industry demand. The report suggests that the existing linear pathway from schooling through degrees to employment has become inadequate for India's evolving economic needs.
According to NITI Aayog's analysis, the country requires a more integrated system that enables continuous feedback between educational institutions, skills training providers and employers. This would help identify emerging skill gaps and allow rapid curriculum adjustments to reflect market conditions.
The proposals come amid concerns about India's education system producing graduates who lack practical competencies sought by employers. The report emphasises that effective coordination between stakeholders is essential to bridge the widening gap between qualification credentials and workplace readiness.
The recommendations suggest that reimagining this interconnection could improve employability outcomes while enabling better resource allocation across India's education and training infrastructure.
