NIXI and APNIC join forces to bolster India's internet routing security

The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) has partnered with the Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) to strengthen internet routing security infrastructure within India's digital ecosystem. The collaboration will introduce an APNIC Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) repository mirror hosted locally, marking a significant step toward securing India's internet backbone.

RPKI is a security framework that validates the legitimacy of internet routing announcements, preventing unauthorized or fraudulent route hijacking that could disrupt network connectivity. By establishing a mirror repository within India, the partnership aims to reduce latency for network operators accessing critical security resources, enabling faster validation of routing information and more efficient network operations.

The local repository infrastructure is expected to improve overall network resilience across Indian internet service providers and telecom operators. Reduced latency in accessing RPKI data will facilitate quicker adoption of routing security protocols, strengthening defences against cyber threats targeting India's critical internet infrastructure.

The initiative also supports accelerated deployment of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), the next-generation internet protocol essential for accommodating the growing number of connected devices. By making RPKI resources more accessible, the partnership removes technical barriers that have historically slowed IPv6 adoption among Indian network operators.

This collaboration underscores the importance of regional cooperation in building secure, resilient digital infrastructure across Asia-Pacific, positioning India as a key participant in continental internet security efforts.
