NMC Bans AI-Generated Patient Testimonials in Medical Ads
India's National Medical Commission has prohibited the use of artificial intelligence-generated patient testimonials and clinical outcome claims in medical advertising, tightening regulations on promotional practices by healthcare providers.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued fresh guidelines restricting medical professionals and institutions from using AI-generated patient testimonials and fabricated clinical outcome data in their advertisements. The directive aims to protect patients from misleading health claims and ensure medical advertising maintains ethical standards.
Under the new rules, healthcare providers are barred from presenting synthetic testimonials created through artificial intelligence as authentic patient experiences. Additionally, claims about clinical outcomes must be substantiated with genuine, verifiable data rather than algorithmically-generated statistics or projections.
The move reflects growing concerns about the misuse of AI technology in healthcare marketing. With generative AI becoming increasingly sophisticated, regulators have grown wary of its potential to create convincing but false patient narratives that could influence treatment decisions.
These restrictions fall within the NMC's broader framework for regulating medical advertising, which already prohibits misleading claims about treatment efficacy. The commission has emphasized that advertisements must comply with established guidelines to maintain public trust in the medical profession and ensure patients make informed healthcare choices based on authentic information.
The ban applies to all registered medical practitioners, clinics, hospitals, and healthcare organizations operating in India. Violations of the advertising guidelines can result in disciplinary action by the NMC's Ethics Committee.
